Patrick Knowles (known as 'Pat'), 1906-1981, and his wife Joyce, nee Dorey (1909-1998), were friends and neighbours of T E Lawrence at Clouds Hill. They first became acquainted with Lawrence in 1923 and remained friends until Lawrence's death in 1935. When Clouds Hill passed into the ownership of the National Trust in 1938, Pat and Joyce were appointed its official caretakers.
