Note on Stern's relevant experience in tank development, Jun 1942

Annex 61 of the transcript of the enquiry of Graham Cunningham, Controller General Munitions Production, Ministry of Supply, into Stern's position at the Ministry of Supply held at the Ministry of Supply, Strand, London, 23 May 1942 and 28 May 1942, recording a submission by Stern that, although not a qualified engineer, his experience of the development of tanks from 1915 to 1918 and his work on a heavy tank with the Special Vehicle Development Committee, Ministry of Supply from 1939 to 1942 constituted a better training for such development than that of an engineer without experience of tanks. 1p

Report by Stern of a meeting with Maj Gen Vyvyan Vavasour Pope, Director of Armoured Fighting Vehicles, War Office at the War Office, attended by Lt Kenneth P Symes, Special Vehicle Development Committee, Ministry of Supply and Maj Oswald Emerson Chapman, T P (Armour) at which they discussed machineable quality, carburised and cemented armour plate for use in tanks in the light of the penetration of the front plate of the Infantry Tank Mark II, even by the anti-tank rifle, in the campaign in North Africa and the penetrating power of types of guns for use in tanks. 1p
