Leonard Outram had agreed to star and direct the stage production of Browning's 'Strafford', [performed Dec 1886] but enraged Furnivall by sending out a circular, seemingly using Furnivall's name, requesting contributions from Browning Society members. Furnivall publicly accused Outram, both in the press and in letters to friends, of misrepresenting himself for financial gain. Outram sued for libel, 2 Feb 1888, where he was awarded £100 damages and his legal costs
