Registers of post mortems, King's College Hospital, 1860-1959

Typical details given are patient name and number, age, date of death, disease, length of time after death that the procedure was carried out, date of admission, summary of case, and morbid appearance. They also give reference to the physician, doctor, or surgeon responsible and to the casebook where the full case notes are written. Please consult the Concordance for case notes to determine its reference number and location.

Initially lists pupils under the name of the surgeons and apothecary 30 Jan 1723-Dec 1759. From Jan 1760, pupils listed in order of entry, and from Jun 1765 the name surgeon or apothecary is indicated next to their pupil Also contains register of dressers, 20 Mar 1750-30 Sep 1796, listed according to surgeon under whom they are serving.

Register of surgeons' dressers and pupils, St Thomas's Hospital, entering medical practice, 1788-1812

‘Register of Surgeons Dressers and Pupils entering to the Medical Practice 1 Oct 1788’. Register of Surgeons’ pupils who paid extra fees (5 guineas) to be admitted to the prescribing rooms to record instruction from the physicians, 1 Oct 1788-22 Jan 1812. Includes date of entry, name of pupil and amount paid.

Register of pupils at St Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals, 1819-1842

‘Pupils St Thomas’s and Guy’s Hospitals, January 1819’. Register of pupils, containing St Thomas's and Guy’s pupils on facing pages, recording date, name and amount paid, 1 Jan 1819-25 Feb 1825. Following the separation of the Medical Schools of St Thomas's and Guy's in 1825, the register lists St Thomas Hospital pupils, 15 Mar 1825-14 May 1833; Surgical pupils, 30 Sep 1833-6 May 1840; and Surgical pupils and dressers, 6 Jun 1840-22 Apr 1842. Also contains copies of correspondence between Richard Stocker (Guy’s Hospital) and Richard Whitfield (St Thomas’s Hospital), 11 Mar 1825-27 April 1825, relating to the division of pupils on 28 Feb 1825, and cessation of the division of funds between the surgeons and apothecaries of the two hospitals.
