Typescript introduction to Aubrey Lewis' report on psychiatry in Europe, comprising; overall general impressions, including: the widespread recognition of the importance of psychiatry; the importance of university clinics for teaching and research; the variable standards of mental health nursing throughout Europe; research in sociology, biochemistry, physiology and genetics and its application to clinical psychiatry ; funding problems in research; political influences in totalitarian countries; the recent recognition of the need for, and growth of, specialist facilities for children. Also summary versions of his comments on: the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
