Scope and content
The JUPITER educational cruise ship sank in Piraeus harbour, Greece, 21 October 1988. Two crew members, one pupil and one teacher died, approximately 400 school children and teachers survived. William Yule and colleagues at the Institute of Psychiatry compiled psychiatric reports on survivors from one nearby London school, then conducted a survey, 1989, of that school's pupils, 25 survivors, 59 other pupils and 71 controls from another school. This survey was then extended to cover 334 survivors of the JUPITER sinking, from schools around the UK. A further study, 1994-1996, covered 317 survivors, and provided significant evidence that adolescents may suffer post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which had previously been disputed.
