Scope and content

Collection consists of photographs taken by William Speed Hayman of Joseph Lister and his colleagues with related correspondence and Hayman's personal papers. Comprises one file of photographs of Joseph Lister and his colleagues in King's College Hospital, Portugal Street taken by Hayman 1890-1891; one file of correspondence between Miss Morwenna Hayman, daughter of William Speed Hayman, Walter Frank Gunn, Secretary of the King's College London Medical School, and Herbert Willoughby Lyle, author of King's and some King's men (London, 1935), relating to the photographs of Joseph Lister and his colleagues, and the identification of the personalities in the photographs, 1952-1953; article from King's College Hospital Gazette, Christmas 1952, relating to the above photographs and one file of ephemera including King's College School assessment reports for Hayman, 1876-1877; series of admission cards for King's College London Medical Department, 1877-1883; receipts for payment of fees by Hayman for classes at St Thomas's Hospital and Queen Charlotte's Lying-in Hospital, 1884-1885; mark sheets for Hayman at King's College London Medical Department, 1877-1882; British Museum Reading Room admission ticket, 1881; certificates of proficiency and attendance at classes in midwifery, vaccination, The Hospital for Sick Children, Great Ormond Street, London, and the Society of Apothecaries of London, 1884-1889; University of London Bachelor of Medicine Pass List, 1890; Medical Registration Certificate, 1890; testimonials for Hayman by the Dean of the Medical Faculty, John Curnow, and Lionel Smith Beale, Professor of the Principles and Practice of Medicine, 1891; photograph of Hayman, 1900; fabric blazer badge of King's College mascot, Reggie the lion.

Born, 1858, attended King's College School, 1874-1877; student in the Medical Department of King's College London from 1877; Associate of King's College, 1889, qualifying in 1890; studied under Joseph Lister, Professor of Clinical Surgery at King's College; probably a Senior Dresser under Jeremiah Penny, House Surgeon at King's, 1890; died, 1950.

Custodial history

Papers donated to the College by Morwenna Hayman, daughter of William Speed Hayman, 1952-1953. The photographs of Joseph Lister were retained in King's College Hospital until they were transferred to the archive from the Weston Education Centre in two accessions in July 2004 and July 2005 alongside other images of Joseph Lister (see K/PP152) and photographs of King's College Hospital and the King's College Hospital Medical School (see KHMS/PH).
