Scope and content
Letter to Robertson from FM Sir Douglas Haig, Commander in Chief, British Armies in France, enclosing a note sent by him to the Anglo-French London Conference on 15 Jan, giving reasons why the start of the planned Nivelle offensive should be delayed until May, in order to allow for training, adequate preparation, and clearer weather conditions. Includes a diagram and notes relating to the request of French Gen Robert Georges Nivelle, Commander in Chief, French Armies on the Western Front, that the British Army take over the French line on the Western Front down to the Amiens-Roye road, explaining the need for further divisions in order to perform this requirement in addition to playing a significant part in offensive operations. Includes notes by Haig on Nivelle's letter dated 11 Jan outlining his plan for the forthcoming offensive, notably commenting upon the difficulties of breaking off the offensive after 48 hours if unsuccessful. 6pp.
