Letters relate to Mayhew's experiences during the early stages of the war in France and Flanders, Sep 1939-May 1940, and include several descriptions of the tedium of the 'phony war', relations between British and French troops, his interest in obtaining a commission and subsequent frustration with the British Army, details of marching, gunnery and training exercises, and the publication of his economic theories in Planned Investment (Fabian Society, London, 1939). 1 file.

Manuscript and typescript letters from Mayhew to members of his family, including his father, Sir Basil Mayhew and his mother, Lady Mayhew, at Felthorpe Hall, Norwich, mainly relating to Mayhew's service in the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France during the Battle of France, May-Jun 1940, and including mention of his dissatisfaction with the capabilities of the British Army in France, the withdrawal of all British forces in France towards the coast and the subsequent evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk, France, May 1940. Papers, 1939-1997, of the Rt Hon Christopher Paget Mayhew, Baron Mayhew of Wimbledon in Greater London, relating to his life and career. The collection includes wartime letters from Mayhew to his family and other letters to Mayhew, 1939-1945; appointment and desk diaries, 1949-1995; files giving details of individuals and organisations relating to his work as an MP; a file on his introduction to the House of Lords, 1981; address books; notebooks, papers and correspondence relating to his work as a politician and peer, 1945-1997. The papers reflect his interests in domestic issues and foreign affairs, with material on broadcasting, commercial and public service television, including the minute book, 1953-1954, of the National Television Council, a pro-public service broadcasting body; relations with the Soviet Union from the late 1940s to the 1960s; international affairs, defence issues and the armed forces up to the 1990s, including press cuttings on his resignation in 1966; Palestine and Israel, the Middle East, and Arab-British relations, especially in the 1980s and 1990s. Much of the collection comprises printed material, reports, typescripts and press cuttings, some - for instance, broadcasts and interviews - by Mayhew himself, but much by other authors.

Typescript memoranda and correspondence relating to Mayhew's position as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 1946-1950, and his establishment of the Information Research Department (IRD) within the Foreign Office, 1947, including letters from Mayhew to Rt Hon Ernest Bevin, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and typescript minutes relating to the establishment of the IRD. Papers relate primarily to Foreign Office attempts to curb the spread of Soviet and Chinese communism following World War Two; Foreign Office reactions to de-colonisation in the Far East and on the Indian sub-continent and Britain's role in aiding anti-Communist forces in Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Far East. Papers include memoranda expressing concern over the partition of India, Jun 1947; the use of British propaganda newsreels in the USA, Oct 1947; memoranda and minutes relating to the UK's role in the suppression of communist insurrection in Greece, 1947; memoranda concerning the protests of the World Jewish Congress to Foreign Office decisions regarding the future of Palestine, 1947-48; the trial of German officers and civil servants at Nuremburg, Germany, 1947-48; the dismissal of UK civil servants for alleged communist sympathies. Papers also include letter to the Editor of the Times (London) in which Mayhew admits to his hiring of Soviet spy Guy Burgess to a confidential post during his tenure as Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, 20 Feb 1976, and letters to Prime Minister Rt Hon Margaret Thatcher requesting that the Foreign Office reinstate the IRD, May 1980. 2 files.
