Manuscript and typescript correspondence between Mayhew and members of his family, including his father, Sir Basil Mayhew and his mother, Lady Mayhew, at Felthorpe Hall, Norwich, mainly relating to his service as a lorry driver and gunner in the Surrey Yeomanry, attached to 392 Artillery Battery, 98 Field Regt, Royal Artillery, British Expeditionary Force (BEF) in France. Letters relate to Mayhew's experiences during the early stages of the war in France and Flanders, Sep 1939-May 1940, and include several descriptions of the tedium of the 'phony war', relations between British and French troops, his interest in obtaining a commission and subsequent frustration with the British Army, details of marching, gunnery and training exercises, and the publication of his economic theories in Planned Investment (Fabian Society, London, 1939). 1 file.
