King's College London Calendars, 1832-1986. This series is one of the most important and accessible sources of biographical information on students and staff, an illustration of the changing content of courses, lectures and syllabuses and of the evolution of the administrative structure of the College since its inception. The level of information varies: the earliest and most recent calendars and those published during the two World Wars, for example, contain less detailed information than the period between 1848 and 1976. The first calendar, 1832-1833, contains a table of contents, texts of the sermon preached at the opening of the College and the texts of public lectures, some of which are the only copies extant in the College Archives. The bulk of the series typically consist of a table of contents; calendar of term dates and events; general information on all departments within the College; lists of Governors, the Council, the Delegacy, Professorial/Academic Board members, academic staff, masters, associates, scholars, fellows and prize winners and university distinctions; outlines of lecture courses, syllabi, examination question papers; fees; some texts of lectures and addresses; rules and regulations; and annual reports of the Council and Delegacy. Indices begin in 1846. Comprehensive lists of all students and pupils begin in 1847 and refer to those who enrolled during the previous academic session. Lists of senior academic staff for each department begin in the earliest calendars and additional consolidated alphabetical lists of past and present staff are printed from 1880. The calendar for 1882 contains a copy of the King's College London Act to amend the constitution. Descriptions of associate grammar schools are included up until 1892, and brief descriptions of College societies are given from 1896. The 1903 calendar contains the King's College London Acts of 1882 and 1903. Calendars from 1909 include a copy of an outline history of the College. Lists relating to King's College School's masters or pupils end in 1912. The calendar for 1915 includes tables of past and present members of the College on active service. Calendars from 1942-1943 through to 1947-48 also include a roll of honour of those members of the College killed whilst on active service. The 1948 calendar contains the second version of the history of King's College. From 1964 onwards there is no full list of students in attendance, but information includes a general index and index of names, and the third version of the College history. The printing of Annual Reports ceases in 1976. The 1980 calendar contains the fourth history of King's, and the fifth version of the history appeared in 1984. The 1985 calendar is typical of later volumes, comprising a contents page giving historical background, general information, administrative, committee, faculty and departmental structure, and an alphabetical list of staff. Following the merger of King's with Queen Elizabeth and Chelsea Colleges in 1985, the publication of calendars was discontinued.

Papers of Edwin Child, 1866-1871, notably relating to his experiences during the Siege of Paris, Franco-Prussian War, Sep 1870-Jan 1871, comprising diaries, 1866-1871, containing daily entries recording events and often weather, part of which is written on copies of Lettre-Journal de Paris: Gazette des Absents , 1870; letters (as balloon post) to his family and 'Mary-Ann', describing conditions under the siege, 1870-1871; papers relating to his service in the Garde Nationale de la Seine, 1870-1871, including record of service, testimonial, passes for safe-conduct, identity papers and bread ration coupons; photographs of Child and of scenes of the Franco-Prussian War; printed journals and books comprising French publications largely relating to the siege, 1870-1871.

The records of the Delegacy of University of London, King's College, consist of minutes and agenda books, 1910-1980, namely volumes of bound, manuscript, minute books, 1910-1948, bound, typescript, minute books, 1949-1980, with separate index volumes, [1910-1980], and microfilm copies of minutes, 1910-1917; guard books containing copies of enclosures of correspondence, memoranda and reports, 1927-1980; agenda books relating to the subjects of discussion in the main Delegacy minute series, 1910-1980. The Delegacy minutes contain a wealth of information regarding teaching, administration and the strategic direction of the College, including finance, appointments, appeals, grants and awards, annual reports, and relations with other higher education institutions and especially the University of London.

The records of the Maxwell Society at King's College London consist of minutes, correspondence, programmes and signature books, 1939-1970. These notably include the manuscript minutes of the Maxwell Society, 1947-1950, mostly summarising the title and content of individual Society lectures on subjects ranging from the development of the calculating machine, to 'reasoning automata' or the early theory of intelligent computers, and to the possibility of interplanetary travel, a talk given by Arthur Charles Clarke, the best-selling science author, an alumnus of King's, who was then Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society. The minutes notably cover the period of the Secretaryship of Peter Ware Higgs, a leading authority on the behaviour of elementary particles. Records, 1961-2000, relating to the original and new series of the periodical Modern Poetry in Translation and associated projects. The material pertains to languages including Afrikaans, Bulgarian, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Rumanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish and Yiddish. Publications comprise issues 1-44 of the magazine, 1965-1982, covering poetry from a wide range of sources including countries in Europe, the Middle East, Central and South America, Asia and Russia; MPT Year Book (1983); MPT programme for Poetry International 71 (1971); Poetry World (1986); and an Anthology of Twentieth Century Russian Poetry (1974), edited by Max Hayward and Daniel Weissbort. There are also files of translated poems, undated, from sources including various countries in Europe, Central and South America, and Asia. The bulk of the records comprises correspondence, covering all aspects of MPT 's organisation including discussion with publishers, printers and distributors; decisions on the content of future issues and work by guest editors; correspondence with translators on specific projects and the general theory of translation; and many letters from translators offering their services, demonstrating the wave of enthusiasm of which MPT was part. The first series of correspondence, covering 1961 to 1984, relates to issues 1-6 (1965-1969, when MPT was published by Cape Golliard) and includes files on particular countries and related translators; organisations including the Arts Council and Gulbenkian Foundation; individuals including Ted Hughes and his involvement with MPT ; distribution in Britain and America. The second series, 1966-1984, relates to the independent production of the magazine from 1969 and also to the Year Book (1983), and comprises some files on particular countries and their translators but also more general files covering aspects of production and admininstration over particular periods. The third series, 1964-1984, relates to translation projects in which Daniel Weissbort, editor of MPT , was engaged outside MPT . Subsequent deposits relate largely to the revival of MPT from 1992 and include papers on MPT , 1978-2000, among them translations, correspondence, reviews, biographical information and ephemera; papers relating to Poetry World after its launch in 1986; files relating to new series issues of MPT , comprising correspondence and translations; printed material including issues 1 and 2 of the new series, 1992; and working papers of Professor Norma Rinsler, 1993-1994 and undated, relating to the MPT new series and the Second International Poets Festival in Jerusalem, 1993, and including typescript poems and information on poets.
