The collection consists of working papers relating to Buchanan's professional career as a forensic psychiatrist in the UK, [1984]-2001, chiefly research papers relating to the Special Hospitals Service Authority and psychiatric reports relating to Maudsley Hospital patients. Section 1 comprises papers arising from the daily administrative operations of Maudsley Hospital London. Section 2 contains research notes, questionnaires and criminal record 'multiple enquiry forms' produced from the Home Office Offenders Index. This material relates to an unpublished study conducted by Buchanan, 1992-1995, of discharged special hospital patients convicted of violent re-offences. The findings, intended to inform the decision making of those entrusted with the care of special hospital patients, were funded by the Special Hospitals Service Authority. There are also confidential psychiatric reports (see ref 3/1 to 3/6), produced by forensic psychiatrists at Maudsley Hospital, London. The reports evaluate an individual's competency to stand trial, defences based on mental diseases or defects (for instance the "insanity" defence), and sentencing recommendations. Section 4 contains questionnaires relating to a project funded by the John D and Catherine T MacArthur Foundation focused on developing the Maudsley Assessment of Delusions Schedule to provide a more accurate and effective way of assessing patient's delusions. Section 5 consists of papers relating a psychiatric case assessed by Buchanan in his capacity as a member of the Serious Untoward Incident Panel of the Hounslow and Spelthorne Community and Mental Health NHS Trust. The collection also includes photocopies of articles from medical publications and on-line resources compiled by Buchanan which relate to the ethical connotations of patient confidentiality in connection with medical trials and research (see ref 6/1).

The Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) were developed under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and its International Classification of Diseases as a common set of standards to assess, measure and classify psychiatric disorders. The prototype was devised in 1980 and subsequent components such as training manuals, schedules, results of field trials and glossary were published up until 1998. SCAN is used as a classification and reference tool by psychiatrists and comprises a structured interview, encoding and computer programme to produce a standard diagnostic presentation. The records of the Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN) at King's College London Institute of Psychiatry are made up of editorial committee papers, data tables, statistical data, notes of meetings and other correspondence and papers, 1986-1995. These include correspondence with Geoff Der of the Social Psychiatry Unit at the Institute, 1988-1995; editorial committee papers, 1986-1994; notes on international meetings arranged by Geoff Der relating to SCAN, 1989; field trial data in hard copy and floppy disks, [1989]; training manuals, reviews of statistics and other supporting literature, 1987-1991.

This collection comprises various diverse material objects relating to King's College London, notably including printing blocks bearing the impression of College interiors and its exterior, a silver King's brooch, various King's prizes and sporting and academic medals, the Common Seal of King's, Associate of King's College costume, the College's arms on various surfaces, Library stamps and quills, embroidered badges, and various items found behind a fireplace in Somerset House East Wing, 1792-2013.

Records of King's College London Association of University Teachers, 1917-1987, comprising minute books of annual general meetings, 1917-1947, 1964-1972, committee meetings, 1930-1987, general meetings, 1973-1984, joint committee meetings with Chelsea College and Queen Elizabeth College, 1984, and joint committee meetings, 1985-1987.

King's College London Calendars, 1832-1986. This series is one of the most important and accessible sources of biographical information on students and staff, an illustration of the changing content of courses, lectures and syllabuses and of the evolution of the administrative structure of the College since its inception. The level of information varies: the earliest and most recent calendars and those published during the two World Wars, for example, contain less detailed information than the period between 1848 and 1976. The first calendar, 1832-1833, contains a table of contents, texts of the sermon preached at the opening of the College and the texts of public lectures, some of which are the only copies extant in the College Archives. The bulk of the series typically consist of a table of contents; calendar of term dates and events; general information on all departments within the College; lists of Governors, the Council, the Delegacy, Professorial/Academic Board members, academic staff, masters, associates, scholars, fellows and prize winners and university distinctions; outlines of lecture courses, syllabi, examination question papers; fees; some texts of lectures and addresses; rules and regulations; and annual reports of the Council and Delegacy. Indices begin in 1846. Comprehensive lists of all students and pupils begin in 1847 and refer to those who enrolled during the previous academic session. Lists of senior academic staff for each department begin in the earliest calendars and additional consolidated alphabetical lists of past and present staff are printed from 1880. The calendar for 1882 contains a copy of the King's College London Act to amend the constitution. Descriptions of associate grammar schools are included up until 1892, and brief descriptions of College societies are given from 1896. The 1903 calendar contains the King's College London Acts of 1882 and 1903. Calendars from 1909 include a copy of an outline history of the College. Lists relating to King's College School's masters or pupils end in 1912. The calendar for 1915 includes tables of past and present members of the College on active service. Calendars from 1942-1943 through to 1947-48 also include a roll of honour of those members of the College killed whilst on active service. The 1948 calendar contains the second version of the history of King's College. From 1964 onwards there is no full list of students in attendance, but information includes a general index and index of names, and the third version of the College history. The printing of Annual Reports ceases in 1976. The 1980 calendar contains the fourth history of King's, and the fifth version of the history appeared in 1984. The 1985 calendar is typical of later volumes, comprising a contents page giving historical background, general information, administrative, committee, faculty and departmental structure, and an alphabetical list of staff. Following the merger of King's with Queen Elizabeth and Chelsea Colleges in 1985, the publication of calendars was discontinued.

This collection consists of various printed or typescript catalogues, notably including College Library catalogues, and significantly catalogues of constituent named collections of books and records like the King George III Museum and consolidated lists of accessions in the Liddell Hart Centre for Military Archives, 1894-1988; lists of King's College London (KCLA) Members, lists of registered students at King's, academic staff, War Memorial names, and internal telephone directories, [1840]-2001; catalogues of various mail order and other suppliers of equipment and materials to King's, and of external and interior fittings of houses demolished to make way for King's, 1829-2000.

The papers comprise a series of individual files containing assorted examination papers from all or most faculties for the period 1933-1961. Between the foundation of King's College London in 1829 and the incorporation of all faculties of the College (with the exception of Theology) into the University of London in 1908, students were assessed under examinations set by the College, as well as the examinations of professional and learned societies, and were also able to attend classes for matriculation from the University of London. Thereafter students of the College took examinations set by departments of the College and in the case of final undergraduate and postgraduate examinations, papers approved by the University.
