Chelsea Polytechnic/College Chemical Department 'locker forms', 1943-1968 (Ref: CDC/FP), Department of Chemistry student record cards, [1940-1980] (Ref: CDC/FPC). Locker forms for early years contain a greater quantity of biographical data. Information typically includes name, date of entry, examination date, course proposed, subjects, occupation, employer's name, address and business, exams passed, number of years in Chemistry, proposed career and country of origin. Occasionally they include a timetable of subjects taken, giving day and time, whether in the evening or part-time during the day. Information contained on record cards typically includes name, country of origin, session dates, field of study, course units and values, address, details on previous education, and some also include a photograph.

Chelsea College of Science and Technology and Chelsea College Department of the Humanities student and other records, 1958-1983. This class of material contains some student information on BSc and visiting BA undergraduate and DCC (Diploma of Chelsea College) students, 1967-1983. BSc and DCC information typically includes name, course work including aggregate marks, percentage marks, letter grading, honour points, degree, class and comments. The remainder of the collection comprises correspondence, accounts and financial data, timetables and printed programmes and handouts. King's College London Calendars, 1832-1986. This series is one of the most important and accessible sources of biographical information on students and staff, an illustration of the changing content of courses, lectures and syllabuses and of the evolution of the administrative structure of the College since its inception. The level of information varies: the earliest and most recent calendars and those published during the two World Wars, for example, contain less detailed information than the period between 1848 and 1976. The first calendar, 1832-1833, contains a table of contents, texts of the sermon preached at the opening of the College and the texts of public lectures, some of which are the only copies extant in the College Archives. The bulk of the series typically consist of a table of contents; calendar of term dates and events; general information on all departments within the College; lists of Governors, the Council, the Delegacy, Professorial/Academic Board members, academic staff, masters, associates, scholars, fellows and prize winners and university distinctions; outlines of lecture courses, syllabi, examination question papers; fees; some texts of lectures and addresses; rules and regulations; and annual reports of the Council and Delegacy. Indices begin in 1846. Comprehensive lists of all students and pupils begin in 1847 and refer to those who enrolled during the previous academic session. Lists of senior academic staff for each department begin in the earliest calendars and additional consolidated alphabetical lists of past and present staff are printed from 1880. The calendar for 1882 contains a copy of the King's College London Act to amend the constitution. Descriptions of associate grammar schools are included up until 1892, and brief descriptions of College societies are given from 1896. The 1903 calendar contains the King's College London Acts of 1882 and 1903. Calendars from 1909 include a copy of an outline history of the College. Lists relating to King's College School's masters or pupils end in 1912. The calendar for 1915 includes tables of past and present members of the College on active service. Calendars from 1942-1943 through to 1947-48 also include a roll of honour of those members of the College killed whilst on active service. The 1948 calendar contains the second version of the history of King's College. From 1964 onwards there is no full list of students in attendance, but information includes a general index and index of names, and the third version of the College history. The printing of Annual Reports ceases in 1976. The 1980 calendar contains the fourth history of King's, and the fifth version of the history appeared in 1984. The 1985 calendar is typical of later volumes, comprising a contents page giving historical background, general information, administrative, committee, faculty and departmental structure, and an alphabetical list of staff. Following the merger of King's with Queen Elizabeth and Chelsea Colleges in 1985, the publication of calendars was discontinued.

The correspondence largely contains letters sent to the Secretary of King’s College London concerning all aspects of the business of the College and its related bodies including King’s College School, 1831- 1908; the Ladies Department of King’s College, subsequently King’s College for Women, from 1885; and some aspects of the business of King’s College Hospital, 1839-1909, relating to new appointments and resignations as well as letters from the Secretaries of the Hospital - mainly regarding decisions of the Committee of Management.

The series contains letters from subscribers to the College regarding their donations, shareholdings or the nomination of prospective students; letters from staff include applications for posts, the content of syllabuses, appeals to College Council for funds for improved facilities, the names of prize and scholarship winners, requests to take in boarders, hold posts at other organisations, and resignations; letters from students and parents include general enquiries about the College, applications for enrolment, requests to remove pupils from King’s College School, applications from prize-winners for their prizes, applications for the AKC (Associateship of King’s College) the College’s own academic award, requests for the refunding of fees; letters from the College Architect regarding the building and later redevelopments of the Strand site; letters from businesses connected to the College including those who supplied equipment and groceries to the College and estimates from contractors for building work; letters from external bodies and individuals regarding the use of rooms in the College, donations and gifts to the College museums and Departments; correspondence relating to schools in union with the College; and papers regarding College Commemoration Days and the Gilbart Lectures on Banking.

The series is remarkably complete until the late 1890s. With the appointment of Walter Smith in 1895 came the introduction of a modern filing system (see KAS/GC, AC and AD) although bundles continued to be used on occasion until 1919. A few letters in the collection post date 1919, but these are largely related to loans of letters for historical research.

The out-letter books contain chronologically arranged copies of a number of significant letters written by or on behalf of the Principal and College Secretary, 1834-1917, in relation to a wide variety of College business. The series does not however, include responses to all letters in the parallel series of in-letters (KA/IC).

From 1828-1909 the Council was the College's governing and executive body, exercising the powers of the College as provided in the Charter or Statutes. The King's College London (Transfer) Act 1908 incorporated the college into the University of London, and the Delegacy became the governing body of King's College. The Council thereafter governed the Theological Department only, which was separately administered from the rest of the College. The Delegacy was a committee of the Senate of the University of London, which had to ratify all major decisions. By the Royal Charter of 1980, King's College London was reconstituted, merging the Theological Department with the Faculty of Theology and the Council again became the governing body for the whole College. Between 1909-1980 the Court, as the financial board of the University of London, controlled the finances of the College through the custody, control and disposition of all property, funds and investments. The Academic Board advises the Council on all academic matters. The Professorial Board became known as the Academic Board in 1980.
